Turnips on Skyblock

Turnip farming is an exciting side activity on Skyblock. Compared to other plants in Minecraft, turnips are significantly more demanding. They only grow under special conditions and must be constantly watered. Only then, after a few days, will fully grown turnips develop, which you can sell to Hogy in the Island Village. However, the work is worth it, because with a bit of luck, you can make a real profit on the turnip market.

Price Battle at the Turnip Market

The turnip market causes turnip prices to fluctuate daily. Behind this is a complex system that calculates rates based on various factors. Prices can rise from one day to the next, but they can also suddenly crash or skyrocket. Therefore, the right time to sell is crucial, and you must assess the risk based on your accumulated experience.

However, there is an important restriction. Turnips can only be sold fresh. Over time, they begin to rot. As soon as a turnip is harvested, the clock starts ticking. Regardless of whether it is in your inventory or in a chest, the turnip will rot within a few days and can no longer be sold on the market after that.

A turnip stays fresh for up to 4 days after harvest and can be traded at the turnip market.

The appearance of the turnip changes with each passing day until it is completely rotten after the fourth day and can no longer be traded. However, you can craft the rotten turnip back into new seeds.

How to Get Turnips

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Captain Tuber! He can rarely appear at your Island Market and has an infinite hunger for beetroots. Captain Tuber needs the beetroots to make soups for his superpowers. Since he is getting on in years, he needs a whole shipment at once. So, trade your beetroots with him, and with a bit of luck, he will leave behind useful things for your turnip farming as a thank you: seeds, watering cans, or fertilizer.

To make Captain Tuber appear on your island for the first time, speak with the Turnip Mouse next to the Auction House at /spawn. There you will find a mission series all about Captain Tuber and turnips, which will introduce you to turnip farming step by step and explain all the important functions. Additionally, you will receive your first turnip bed and other items needed to start your turnip farming journey.

Apart from Captain Tuber, you can also obtain all the items for your turnip farming from other players or from treasure chests.

Start Your Turnip Farming

To start turnip farming, quite a bit of equipment is required. First, you need a turnip bed. This is a new block in which your turnips are planted. Once you have placed a turnip bed, you can use turnip seeds to plant a turnip there.

Place the turnip bed and plant turnip seeds to grow a turnip. Water the bed regularly with a watering can. The water droplets above the bed indicate how long the bed will remain watered. One water droplet lasts for one hour.

Turnip seeds can only be planted in a turnip bed. The seeds require several days of growth time and regular watering for a turnip to grow.

For a turnip seed to actually grow into a turnip, the turnip bed must be watered. For this purpose, there is a new item: the watering can. The watering can must be filled with water just like a bucket and can then water a turnip bed for 12 hours.

Fill the watering can at any water source and use it to water your turnip beds to provide them with water droplets. Each watering consumes durability.

Fill the watering can at any water source and use it to water your turnip beds to provide them with golden water droplets. Golden water droplets last twice as long as normal water droplets. Each watering consumes durability.

Your turnip always grows, even if your island is not loaded. The only important thing is that the turnip bed remains watered. If the turnip bed dries out, the plant stops growing. If the bed remains dry for too long, the turnip can even wither and become useless. It is therefore important to check on your turnips regularly to avoid long dry periods as much as possible.

When a fully grown turnip is harvested, there is a small chance that new turnip seeds will drop as well. Should a turnip remain dry for too long and rot, the rotten turnip can still be harvested to potentially obtain new seeds. If a harvested turnip rots in your inventory, it can also be crafted back into seeds.

To speed up the growth of the turnip, turnip fertilizer can be used. The fertilizer ensures that your turnip grows twice as fast for a few hours, allowing you to advance your turnip farming more quickly.

Apply the turnip fertilizer to a turnip bed to double the growth rate of the planted turnip for four hours.

Turnip Mutations

Is a thunderstorm brewing on your Skyblock island? This could help you gain new riches! During a storm, there is a small chance that lightning will strike your turnip. This triggers a random mutation of the turnip, which can vary in weight and shape. There is also a small chance that the turnip will turn into gold!

Thunderstorms can only occur on Skyblock if no static weather is set, which corresponds to the default setting. The probability of thunderstorms is higher on Skyblock than normally in Minecraft. Nevertheless, thunderstorms are rare and occur on the island on average only every two to three hours.

Mutated turnips not only look cooler but also achieve significantly higher prices at the turnip market. The current turnip price is multiplied or added based on the mutation. If the size of your turnip mutates and it becomes overweight, the turnip price is multiplied by up to 5 times based on the weight.

During a mutation, the turnip can also take on a new shape, which in turn increases the base price of the turnip.

Currently, the following shapes exist:

  • Spiky (+50,000 Coins)
  • Square (+100,000 Coins)
  • Explosive (+500,000 Coins)
  • Alive (+1,000,000 Coins)

With a golden turnip, the turnip price is additionally multiplied by a factor of 10, making it a very rare event! With the right mutations, a turnip can thus be worth several million Coins. The longer you keep the plants alive through regular watering, the higher the chance of a lightning strike and thus for mutations.

But watch out: If the bed dries out, there is always the risk of the plant rotting. Therefore, the longer you want to keep a turnip alive, the more watering cans you will consume. Is the investment worth it? Turnip farming is a lot of fun, but it's not for the faint of heart!
